AIIS summer 2012 and academic year 2012-2013 language programs

The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2012 and academic year 2012-2013 language programs. Programs to be offered include Hindi (Jaipur), Bengali (Kolkata), Punjabi (Chandigarh), Tamil (Madurai); Marathi (Pune), Urdu (Lucknow), Telugu (Vizag), Malayalam (Thiruvananthapuram) and Sanskrit (Pune) and Pali/Prakrit (Pune). We will offer other Indian languages upon request.

All academic year applicants should have the equivalent of two years of prior language study. For regular summer Sanskrit, we require the equivalent of two years of prior study; for summer Bengali, Hindi and Tamil we require the equivalent of one year of prior study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS (graduate students) if available for funding to cover the costs of the program. Funding for Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu may be available through the U.S. State Department's CLS program (see www.clscholarship.org). Academic year students are eligible to apply for an AIIS fellowship which would cover all expenses for the program. AIIS is also offering a fall semester program. We offer Hindi and Urdu at all levels for the fall; we require two years of prior language study for other languages for the fall.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships


The applications for the 2012-2013 David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available at www.borenawards.org. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.



Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. As part of the African Languages Initiative, Boren Award applicants have the opportunity to further their study of Akan/Twi, Portuguese, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba, or Zulu. For a complete list of languages, visit our website.
Undergraduate students can receive up to $20,000 for an academic year's study abroad and graduate students up to $30,000 for language study and international research. In exchange for funding, recipients commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of one year.

The Language Flagship
The Language Flagship is a breakthrough in foreign language and culture instruction in the United States designed to help individuals achieve superior-level proficiency in critical languages including Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Persian. Flagship students participate in advanced language programs offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Language Flagship Fellowship is an award for up to two-years for graduate students to support their intensive language study at Flagship institutions in the U.S. and overseas. Flagship Fellowships are available for the study of Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Persian at designated Flagship Programs. Eligible applicants for Flagship Fellowships must be U.S. citizens with advanced proficiency in the Flagship language of study. Past recipients of Boren Scholarships or Fellowships are eligible to apply for the Flagship Fellowship. In addition, students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate Flagship programs may apply for Boren funding to participate in overseas Flagship programs.

Sardar Patel Dissertation Award 2011: Call for Papers


The UCLA Center for India and South Asia, and the Department of History, UCLA announce the Sardar Patel Award for the best dissertation submitted at any American university on the subject of modern India in 2011. The amount of the award is $10,000.

1. The dissertation must be on Modern India (the dates of Modern India are defined as 1800 to the present).

2. Any topic within the following fields of study is eligible: History, Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, or the Fine Arts.

3. Only dissertations filed during the 2010-2011 academic year (1 September 2010 through 31 August 2011) are eligible. In some cases, dissertations completed very close to these dates may be considered.

4. The dissertation must have been written while enrolled at a U.S. accredited university in history, anthropology, sociology, literature, political science, or one of the other disciplines in the humanities, the arts, or the social sciences.

Applicants must submit TWO bound hard copies of their dissertation, TWO copies of an abstract of 500-1000 words, ONE copy of their curriculum vitae, and a letter from their dissertation supervisor or department chair attesting to the completion of the dissertation during the period stipulated in item #3.

Submission materials must be postmarked no later than January 4, 2012. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The film touches upon the human and social cost of 'solutions' to hunger such as the Green Revolution. It explores the severe agricultural crisis caused by economic liberalization, globalization, and the myopic business strategies of profit-seeking multinational corporations." Snehal Shah is an Architect and Urban Designer based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He received a BArch from The Center for Environmental Planning and Technology University and his Graduate Diploma from the Architectural Association in London, completing his final year's thesis under the guidance of Balkrishna Doshi. In 1981, Shah was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects Research Award. After working with Mario Botta in Lugano, Switzerland, Shah returned to Ahmedabad to teach at CEPT University and establish his own studio practice in 1987. He has written several articles which have been published in journals internationally and co-edited Marg Magazine's issue dedicated to the architecture of Ahmedabad.

Ram Dayal Munda, 1939-2011

Professor Ram Dayal Munda died on September 30 after a struggle with cancer. He was on the faculty here from 1970-1982 before returning to India, where he went on to become Vice Chancellor of Ranchi University and a political leader working to advance the cause of Tribal Peoples. He is remembered here as a scholar, musician, genuine colleague, and a great human being. Below are some links to obituaries
